 A program to help Town of Chapel Hill Employees live in the community they serve.

Home buyer Assistance

The Home Buyer Assistance Program is designed to help Town employees purchase homes within 5 miles of the Town of Chapel Hill through down payment and/or closing cost assistance. An employee can apply for up to $12,500 of assistance to purchase a home in Chapel Hill town limits. Homes located in the 5 mile radius of Town of Chapel Hill Corporate Limits are eligible for $7,500 in assistance. For more information, please click the program guidelines below.

Rental Assistance

The Rental Assistance Program is to assist employees secure rental housing within 5 miles of the Town of Chapel Hill. Employees can apply to the Town for a one-time payment from the Town of Chapel Hill for assistance with security deposits, utility connection fees, other applicable fees, and future rent:

  • One-bedroom or less maximum assistance: $2,575

  • Two-bedroom home or less maximum assistance: $2,998

  • Three-bedroom home maximum assistance: $3,865

  • Four or more bedrooms home maximum assistance: $4,530

Our application process is in partnership with local affordable housing provider Community Home Trust. You can fill out the Online Application on their website. Once you submit the application, Community Home Trust staff will be in touch to setup an appointment to learn more about your housing needs.

Note: Please ensure you answer ‘Yes’ to the following question on the first page of the application: “Is either applicant an employee of the Town of Chapel Hill?”. 

Next Steps After Application is Submitted to Community Home Trust:

  1. Submit Income Verification documentation

  2. Participate in a screening meeting with a Community Home Trust certified financial counselor

  3. Complete educational workshop or counseling session requirement

  4. Receive program approval

  5. Sign program agreement with Town staff 

  6. Provide documentation to Town staff

  7. Receive incentive payment

  8. Move closer to work!  Woohoo!
